Orthodontics has constantly evolved itself to meet the requirements of its patients. Although traditional braces are very effective, with complex tooth movements incorporated, patients have always wanted to overcome the aesthetic limitation that comes with it. Starting from lingual orthodontics to clear or tooth colored braces, every option has been tried to reduce this limitation. A novel application of this concept has given us the Invisalign.
Invisalign consists of clear plastic aligner trays that are worn over the patient’s teeth. The impression of the dentition is taken to create customized series of trays. The patient needs to wear each tray in the series for about 2 weeks, before switching to the next tray in the series. As they progress through the series of trays, the patient’s teeth will gradually move into the correct alignment. Since the trays are clear, it is esthetically acceptable. Besides the comfort level of the trays and the ability to remove them when needed have shown to increase the patient’s compliance with the treatment. It is also best suited for patients who are on the go. They need to visit the dentist only once every 4 to 8 weeks.
All these advantages have made Invisalign very popular both among the dentists and patients. However, for complex tooth movements, it is always best to suggest the traditional braces for your patient. Hence, diagnosis is the key. Keep yourself updated will all the options available and you will be better equipped to guide your patient towards the right path!
